Abstract:

Contains of a petition and six supporting documents (20 p.) by the Alcalde and Fiscal of San Salvador Tesmelucan (also called El Verde) requesting separation from Huexocingo [sic]. On behalf of the people of San Salvador Tesmelucan, as well as San Lorenzo, San Esteban, San Nicolas, San Agustin, and San Juan, they complained of arbitrary taxation and exploitation, and asked for permission to appoint their own authorities. These documents reflect the tensions within this growing population these areas regarding economic resources, land usage, political representation, as well as autonomy from former regional administrative centers.

Note:

This region of the present-day state of Puebla had one of the largest Indian populations in central Mexico in the 16th century, prior to severe epidemics which lasted through the 17th century, but had partially recovered by the middle of the 18th century.
